Connecting DNS Made Easy

  1. Create the credential in DNS Made Easy DNS Made Easy control panel → Config → Account Information → API Credentials, shown as the 'API Key'. It is account-wide: DNS Made Easy issues no read-only or domain-scoped credential, so this key can edit and delete every domain on the account.
  2. Add the connection in DNSMentor Go to Admin → Providers & API keys, choose DNS Made Easy, and paste the credential. DNSMentor stores it encrypted and strips it from every log and export.
  3. Sync the estate DNSMentor discovers every zone the DNS Made Easy account holds and imports every record in them. This is a read operation — nothing is written to any zone.
  4. Group by client and start working Assign the imported domains to client portfolios, and the estate view, health scoring, checks and audit trail apply from that point on.

What DNS Made Easy asks you for

The exact fields DNSMentor needs, and where in DNS Made Easy to create them. Every secret is encrypted at rest and stripped by name from logs, exports and the audit trail.

API Key secret

DNS Made Easy control panel → Config → Account Information → API Credentials, shown as the 'API Key'. It is account-wide: DNS Made Easy issues no read-only or domain-scoped credential, so this key can edit and delete every domain on the account.

Secret Key secret

Shown next to the API Key on the same screen, as the 'Secret Key'. It is displayed once when the pair is generated — if it was not recorded, generate a new pair, which invalidates the old one and every integration using it. The secret is never sent: it signs the timestamp on each request, so the machine's clock must be accurate to within a few minutes of UTC or every call is rejected as unauthenticated.

The sharp edge in DNS Made Easy's API

Every provider API has one behaviour that catches integrations out. This is DNS Made Easy's, and DNSMentor's adapter is written around it — the sort of thing you would otherwise discover during a migration.

The HMAC. Auth is an SHA1 HMAC of the request date, and a queued request that waits too long fails as a *stale signature* rather than as a throttle — which reads as a credential problem.

Does DNSMentor move my zones away from DNS Made Easy?

No. Your zones stay hosted at DNS Made Easy and remain authoritative there. DNSMentor reads and writes through the DNS Made Easy API, so nothing about your resolution path changes, and if you stop using DNSMentor the zones carry on exactly as they are.

Does DNSMentor validate DNS Made Easy changes before applying them?

Yes. All 56 checks run against the zone as it would exist after the change, whichever provider hosts it. The change is then simulated, routed for approval if policy requires it, written through the DNS Made Easy API after re-reading live state, and independently verified in public DNS afterwards.
